More girls than boys hospitalised for alcohol

Published:  30 December, 2011

Girls are being taken to hospital following binge drinking in greater numbers than boys, government figures reveal.

This year there have been around 550 cases per month of girls being admitted to hospital, compared to 450 a month for boys.

The figures were reported by public health minister Anne Milton and are likely to be seized upon by campaigners in favour of tougher controls on the drinks industry.

There is thought to be a split within the Cabinet over the best way to tackle problem drinking, with Prime Minister David Cameron said to be in favour of minimum pricing.
