Brighton doubles alcohol crackdown zone
Brighton has created what is thought to be the biggest cumulative impact area in the UK.
The area gives the local authority the power to crack down on new licences if councillors agree the area already has enough drinks outlets.
The existing cumulative impact area has effectively doubled in size, and now takes in the area near the main station, Western Road in Hove and the North Laine – a network of streets known for its independent traders.
Licensing committee chairman Lizzie Deane said: “There’s certainly no wish to be killjoys – we fully accept that people of all ages like to have a good time and appreciate that people like to have a drink.
“However much fun it is for the clubbers and party goers, it’s no fun for those that have to put up with the shouting, screaming, swearing and other forms of abuse interrupting their sleep.
“They say, and we say, enough is enough.”
