Cardiff wine merchant ceases trading

Published:  13 July, 2011

Cardiff independent wine merchant Ballantynes has closed after 33 years of trading.

The business was run by Peter and Mae Ballantyne, and their son Richard, who joined the family firm 20 years ago and was a director.

Originally a wholesaler, the company opened its shop in Cathedral Road in the Welsh capital in 2002, having started out in Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The company specialised in “artisan, small production handmade wine producers, mostly from Europe, but also New Zealand, South America, South Africa and Australia”, according to its publicity.

The company also ran an online ship, Ballantynes Direct, giving the business national scale.

The closure leaves Aeon Wines, which opened in 2010, as the sole independent wine specialist in Cardiff.
