Sainsbury's names new drinks team boss

Published:  24 May, 2011

Sainsbury’s has named a successor to the current head of its drinks team, Justin James, who has been given a new role within the business.

Andy Phelps will take over as category manager for beers, wines and spirits in August, the month after James starts his new job as senior manager for new business development.

Phelps was previously category manager for frozen foods and is currently on secondment as regional operations manager in western Scotland. He joined the company in 2003 as a graduate trainee.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining such a vibrant team within Sainsbury’s food and drink category.  As the only major supermarket to employ its own winemakers, we have made huge advances in moving forward our customer choice by improving the quality and expanding the scale of our House and Taste the Difference wine ranges.

“There is plenty of opportunity for further development and I am confident that we will be able to build upon Justin’s work within the category to deliver this.”
