Goose Island, the Chicago brewer which enjoys a cult following in the UK, has been bought by AB Inbev.

The $38.8 million deal sees the company join an empire which includes global brands such as Budweiser, Stella Artois and Beck’s.

John Hall, who started Goose Island in a pub in 1988, will continue as chief executive.

Anheuser-Busch, AB Inbev’s American business, said it had no plans to move production of Goose Island or to transform it into a national brand.

Goose Island’s brands include Honkers Ale, 312 Urban Wheat Ale and Matilda.

Hall said: “Recently, we’ve even had to limit production of some classic and medal-winning styles. To keep up with growing demand from drinkers we’ve explored a variety of paths to secure new capital to support our growth.

“Today’s agreement to consolidate ownership of Goose Island under Anheuser-Busch will provide us with the best resources available to continue along our path of growth and innovation.”
