Scotch industry backs Earth Hour

Published:  07 March, 2011

The Scotch Whisky Association is supporting the WWF’s Earth Hour initiative, which aims to make a stand against climate change.

The industry body is encouraging whisky drinkers and distillers to switch off power for an hour at 8.30pm on March 26, a year after people in 128 countries did the same for the 2010 Earth Hour.

The Deanston distillery has already pledged to join in and distillery manager Callum Fraser said: “As a global industry, it is important we do our bit all year round, not just for one day a year.

“Deanston has been generating its own hydro-electric power since 1966.

“The excess is sold back to the National Grid, so you could say we know a thing or two about being eco-friendly.”
