Room is new head Caballero

Published:  09 March, 2011

Waitrose buyer Nick Room has been named chairman of the Gran Orden de Caballeros, the body which honours people who promote Spanish wine in the UK.

He takes over from Allan Cheesman.

Room has been buying Spanish wine for Waitrose since 1998 and has championed the range, especially sherry.

Wines from Spain director María José Sevilla said:

“We are delighted to have Nick as the new chairman. He has great commercial experience and many new ideas to share with us as to how we can make the most of our wonderful Caballeros.”

Two new Caballeros were named at the group’s 27th annual dinner last night (March 8) – Moreno Wine buying director Carlos Read and Mariano Garcia Fernandez, general director and winemaker of the Mauro Group.

Sevilla said: “We are delighted to welcome our new Caballeros.

“We are especially pleased to have the largest turnout yet for our annual Caballeros dinner. Given the economic situation we all find ourselves in this is a true endorsement of Spain’s importance to the British wine trade, and long may it continue.”
