Brewdog's Punk goes into cans

Published:  10 March, 2011

Brewdog has declared a “crap beer amnesty” as it launches its flagship Punk IPA brand in cans for the first time.

Punk in 33cl cans will be listed exclusively by Sainsbury’s on a national basis for a year, and the supermarket is also taking Brewdog’s bottled 5am Saint amber ale and Hardcore IPA.

The amnesty will allow drinkers to swap a can of mainstream branded lager for a Punk IPA on March 18 at Brewdog’s bar in Aberdeen.

The cans of lager will be “recycled” by co-founders James Watt and Martin Dickie driving them into a recycling plant with a golf club from the top of a Brewdog van, the process being filmed for the brewery’s website.

Watt said: “The launch of Punk in cans is a landmark moment for us and for the insurgency of craft beer in the UK drinks market. Crap beer’s days are numbered.”
