Camra marks 40th birthday
The Campaign for Real Ale is celebrating its 40th birthday today.
The organisation was founded in 1971 by four people who were disillusioned with the domination of national brewing companies and keg beer while visiting a pub on holiday in Ireland.
It now has 120,000 members and has campaigned over the years against brewery closures and anti-competitive prices in the beer market, and for licensing reform and progressive beer duty.
Current national chairman Colin Valentine said: The key issues apprent when forming the campaign in 1971 striving for quality and choice in the beer market, and protecting the voice of the consumer remain to this day."
Camra branches around the country are hosting local celebrations and members have been invited to vote for their top 40 campaigns of all time.
