Wine Report 2007: Cork's losing fans

Published:  13 July, 2007

Screwcaps are rapidly gaining share in the UK wine market, with both natural and plastic corks losing out to the trade's new favourite.

Seventy-one per cent of wine suppliers polled by OLN expect screwcap use to grow even more in the coming year, as customers come to find it more and more acceptable.

Eighteen per cent said they did not expect their ranges to change, many of them specialists in premium European and particularly Spanish wines.

But even in Spain things are starting to change. Pernod Ricard is putting Campo Viejo into screwcap in September and United Wineries has invested in a screwcap facility.

Many of those polled believe there will always be a market for cork, especially at the premium end of the market, but that won't stop screwcap moving more into the top end, as it has in the New World.
