Coe swallows HBJ

Published: 19th January 2009

Written by: Nigel Huddleston

Hayman Barwell & Jones has been bought by Essex-based wine and spirit distributor Coe Vintners.

HBJ handles wines including Trapiche from Argentina, Torbreck and Sticks from Australia, Steininger of Austria, as well as a comprehensive portfolio from the major French regions.

The company will continue to operate independently from its existing base in Ipswich and will revert to its former name of Barwell & Jones.

Most of the current staff will remain in place to give continuity of service to trade customers.

Coe Vintners managing director John Coe said: “The strength of the customer base and its long association with many leading producers will add extra prestige to a group that already boasts an MW and a brokerage with substantial holdings of fine wines.

“In spite of the tough times ahead, I am confident that there will be many opportunities and I intend to take full advantage of the group’s strong financial position to take them forward.”
