Closure manufacturer Nomacorc is working with winemakers to analyse how different oxygen transfer rates affect different wine styles.
The company is working with the French Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique at Montpellier to test how different OTRs affect different styles of red and rosé Grenache wine, and with
the Australian Wine Research Institute
to look at the best OTRs for Shiraz
and Sauvignon Blanc wines. Both are three-year projects that started earlier this year.
Nomacorc is additionally looking at the same issue for Riesling in Germany and Chilean Carmenère.
"Our research looking at the whole area of oxygen management will take it to the next level," said quality and technology vice president Malcolm Thompson. "Oxygen management is critical at every step from vineyard to consumer. For us, there is no one closure solution for everyone - there is a place for all closures. But for us the future relates to oxygen management; that is the area that we really need to understand to take closure solutions to the next level."
