Over 100 guests including prominent Spanish winemakers attended a reception at the Spanish Embassy in London on Sept 20 to honour the trophy winners in the New Wave Spanish Wine Awards 2007.
Those present from Spain, including Navarra winemaker Fernando Chivite, joined their UK colleagues, a number of this year’s judges, representatives from OLN and the Wines from Spain team.
The trophies, glass decanters created by Riedel glass specialists, were presented by chairman of the judges Tim Atkin MW after addresses by His Excellency Javier Carbajosa, representing the Spanish Ambassador, and Maria José Sevilla, director of Wines from Spain.
Atkin highlighted the great strides that have been made in Spanish white wines in recent years; indeed this is reflected in this year’s “Best of Show” award which was awarded to an aged Albariño wine: Pazo Señoráns, Selección Añada 2002 from the Rías Baixas DO. “This is the wine that we (the judges) decided that we would all like to have in our cellars,” Atkin said.
Guests celebrated with a tasting of the trophy wines and Spanish tapas including generous amounts of fine “jamón”. The wines covered every style in the Spanish wine spectrum from cavas, whites and rosé wines to reds, sherries and dessert wines.
The New Wave Spanish Wine Awards is an annual event and now in its third year. A collaboration between OLN and Wines from Spain, it seeks to highlight the best Spanish wines in the UK off-trade.
